Now there are a number of Viking towns with enough data (in English) to analyze. Ribe and Birka are the two best examples. I learned quite a bit on my trip to Aarhus a few months ago, which only made me want to learn more about Viking society and urbanism! See my post on Viking houses in Aarhus: http://wideurbanworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/vikinng-houses-in-aarhus-denmark.html<br />Michael E. These circular sites seem like a unique settlement type. I sometimes have students in my early cities class who want to do project on Viking towns or cities, but there just isn't enough information published in English (that we can find) to make the projects work. I am very interested in Viking urbanism, but don't know much about it.Michael E. Would it be comparable to European 'bastides' (medieval new towns)? Or suggests the word town more than these would have housed. I believe primary examples of Viking towns like Birka and Hovgården are more than circular forts and proper trading towns with defenses around them. However, I've never seen any good maps of these sites' layout.Benjamin N. Vishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16386171565047882852noreply@blogger.com
